it’s that time of year again… center city sips! (next week!)
one of my favorite things about philadelphia in the summer.
list of all sips participants can be found here. but, lets be real…if it’s nice out you can find me on any patio or rooftop.
also! since july 4th falls on a wednesday this year a lot of the bars will still be participating. how great is that? drinks & fireworks on the parkway.
[if you’re not familiar with sips, it’s basically an awesome happy hour held every wednesday in the city from june 6 through august 29 (5p-7p). more than 80 bars in the city offer $5 cocktails, $4 wine, $3 beer & half-priced apps.]

it’s opening!
[june 6th]
& the menu has been leaked…there are even a few philly themed concretes (dense frozen custard blends).
center city pretzel: vanilla custard, philly-style soft preztel, caramel sauce marshmallow sauce & banana.
rittenhouse squared: chocolate custard, la colombe coffee beans, coffee marshammlow sauce & chocolate truffle cookie dough
liberty shell: vanilla custard, termini bros cannoli shell, strawberry puree & lemon ricotta
of course there will be burgers, flat-top dogs, fries, custard, shakes (duh) & a variety of drinks (including beer & wine!). there are also treats for your dogs!
[they’ll be open 11am-11pm & (as i’m sure we all know by now) located at 2000 sansom street]

Thursday was Philly’s 5th Night Market in Northern Liberties.
We arrived about a quarter of 7 and were able to get our first picks on food. The lines can get really long, so it really pays to stop by your favorite truck (or one you’ve been dying to try) on the early side…even if you have to wait for them to open.

First up was Lucky Old Souls [jazz & burgers]. Like I’ve also mentioned before, my one friend and I split everything so we don’t get too full. However, this was one item I definitely wouldn’t have minded eating alone. The mini burger came with their special sauce, pickled tomato & sauteed onions. We also decided to get the hand cut fries with roasted garlic mayo. I actually really wanted to try the salted caramel milkshake, but since this was our first truck I knew I would need to save room. Next time for sure!

The Night Market extended down a half mile! It was packed with trucks, local restaurant booths, beer stands & tons of people. Looked like they had a great turn out. I even ran into Alison [YummyBites]! I also spotted Steve Ward of VH1s Tough Love. At first I was just staring at him wondering how I knew him, but then it totally clicked. He also gave me one of those Yeah-I’m-Exactly-Who-You-Think-I-Am nods. Awkward…

Another truck I really wanted to try was Zea May’s [native american cuisine]. We opted for the sweet potato empanada. I’m pretty sure I ate my half in record time. It was, in short, amazing.

I just recently heard about Lil’ Pop Shop and their homemade popsicles. All of their pops are made with fresh local ingredients and their flavors are so unique! If you know me at all you’ll know it’s really no surprise that I went with the chocolate with salted caramel brownie. The best part? CHUNKS OF BROWNIE. It was really good.

& what street festival is complete without music? The live bands were a great touch.

I don’t usually stop at the restaurant booths because I know I can always try them. But, I walked by Rustica and I knew I had to have that pizza. It was a white pizza with arugula, artichoke & balsamic. There was a good chance I could have eaten several slices. Also, I used my LevelUp with them and got the slice for $2 instead of $4!

& last, but not least, we stopped at YumTown for their Edgar Allen Potato taco. The taco was packed with fried sweet potatos, grilled tofu, cheddar cheese, black bean hummus, cilantro, red onion & scallions. Their food is seasonal so their menu is always changing.
The next Night Market is Thursday June 28th at 9th & Washington ave. What a great start to your July 4th weekend!

it’s baaack
this thursday, may 24th.
[7p-11p in northern liberties at 2nd street from fairmount to george]
half a mile! more than 40 vendors! 20 are new [Smoke Truck’s BBQ, Lil’ Pop Shop’s Popsicles, Zea May’s Native American Cuisine & more!]. they’re keeping most of the vendors a secret until the day before, but the new york times did leak some the other week in an article on food trucks & philly.
so, who else will be there? this seems like it’s bigger & better than the past ones and i’m pumped!

it was a tad chilly for last night’s phillies game, but we sucked it up.
we bought the group tickets a few months back, so april 30th sounded like it would be warm enough…wrong. but, it was $1 dog night. that’s not a night i pass up so willingly.
so, we had a quick bite and a few drinks at xfinity live [pbr bar, obviously] & headed over to the game. then, we stocked up. on hot dogs. you would have thought we never saw them before.
all in all the phils pulled out a win & it was a great time. we also witnessed a girl throwing some guy’s hat over the ledge, he in turn throwing beer on her, and then both of them getting kicked out. fine philadelphia entertainment right there.

officially registered for color run 2012.
i clearly have rocks in my head… ya know, being that i’ve never ran a 5k. but, i figured an untimed event with friends really can’t be that bad…can it?
operation get off my ass begins now tomorrow next week.
anyone else in philly doing this?
go team rainbow brites & the color kids!

scenes from the philadelphia flower show.
i’ve been the past few years, but i definitely liked this years better than last.
no complaints though, all of the flowers were gorgeous (the theme was hawaii).
hey philly, did you go? what did you like best?

tuesday night for valentine’s day two of my friends and i decided to go out for dinner. who doesn’t love a nice dinner? even if we were surrounded by couples and flowers it was still a fun & relaxing time!
we made a reservation last month for a.kitchen, right below aka in rittenhouse square. we had been hearing good things about it for a while, and figured why not!

i started off with the beets & goat cheese w/ rye crumbs. the beets were insanely fresh and delicious. and, don’t even get me started with the goat cheese. it was all so amazing i could have eaten more.

we really wanted to try the scallop ravioli, so we decided to order a dish and split it. it was literally a scallop in the ravioli and it was amazing.

for my main dish i ordered the chili glazed swordfish with white beans & black olive puree. it had quite the kick to it, but i really enjoyed this dish. my other friends ordered the braised short rib & ricotta gnocchi gratin, and the sliced rare tuna on top of a baby arugula caesar salad. my friend said nothing but great things about the short rib, however, my other friend thought her tuna and salad dish was overly cheesey and rich. which is really disappointing because every other dish so far was nothing like that.

& lastly dessert! i ordered the banana ice cream & pound cake. it was delicious.
i would definitely go back to a.kitchen. their menu changes almost weekly, so it would be fun to try something else.
has anyone been? what did you think?
